These galleries display some of the sights and places we visited in Canada along our way to Alaska.
Barkerville, British ColumbiaVery neat little town reconstructed on the original site with many of the remaining buildings standing. We ate dinner at a period restaurant named "Wake Up, Jake!". The decor was historical and the menu was from a time gone by, but the food was absolutely delicious.

AlCan HighwayTraveling this Alaska-Canada highway (AlCan), take the time to visit the little places along the way. Be sure to visit the Liard River Hot Springs to soak your bones in the nice warm water (but be prepared for mosquitoes). Or take a boat ride at Muncho Lake. We did both.

In the YukonMuch to see along the way. Enjoyed visiting Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake. We had a sign made at home and made sure we posted it with all the others. We enjoyed salmon cooked on a grill in the middle of the restaurant at Mukluk Annie;s both coming and going through the Yukon. We were allowed to camp for free overnight - so we did, along with a lot of others. Food was great. We also went to a show in Whitehorse. Very enjoyable. When we passed through Whitehorse, there was a huge rodeo in progress, so all the campgrounds were full, so we went to a Walmart. The store closed at 7 p.m. but the parking lot remained full with over 100 other campers filling the lot. Since the sun was out almost 24 hours at that time, everyone hung out and visited until almost 1 a.m. and then tried to get some sleep. Had a great time and met a lot of really nice people.

Dempster HighwayThe Dempster Highway is a 417-mile long road that will give you the thrill of a lifetime. There are few road signs, no billboards, no utility poles, no buildings -- just miles and miles of beautiful terrain. It starts near Dawson, in the Yukon, and ends in Inuvik, the furthest north paved road in the world. There is a native village and a rest area/truck stop along the way, but mostly just beautiful scenery and little traffic. Walking on the spongy permafrost was interesting. If you ever have the opportunity to take this ride, don't miss it! I was skeptical and did not want to go, but so, so glad Jim convinced me to go. I will remember this ride forever.
